Fasting

What is Fasting?

Fasting is going without food for a period of time as a spiritual practice. It’s one of the oldest traditions in the Christian faith, and also one of the most neglected.

How to practice it

Start small. Skip one meal — lunch is usually the easiest. Instead of eating, pray. When your stomach growls, let it remind you that you’re fasting and why. Drink water. When you’re ready, extend it to a full day.

The goal isn’t endurance. The goal is what happens in the space you’ve cleared between you and your usual comforts.

Why it matters

Fasting reveals what you’re actually depending on. Food is good, but it’s easy for food, distraction, and comfort to become the things you reach for instead of God. Fasting interrupts that pattern. It sharpens focus, quiets the noise, and opens up space that you didn’t know was missing. What you find in that space is usually worth the hunger.
