Sabbath

What is Sabbath?

The Sabbath is a weekly practice of stopping. One day out of seven where you put down the work, close the laptop, and simply rest. It’s one of the oldest commands in the Bible, built into the rhythm of creation itself. God worked six days and rested on the seventh. He didn’t rest because he was tired. He rested because rest is good, and he wanted us to learn the same.

How to practice it

Pick a day. Most people choose Saturday or Sunday. Begin the evening before if you want to follow the older tradition. For those 24 hours, stop working. Don’t check email or catch up on your task list. Eat a real meal. Sleep. Go for a walk. Spend time with people you love. The practice is simpler than it sounds — the hard part is actually stopping.

Start small if you need to. Take a half-day. Let it grow into a full day over time. The goal isn’t the perfect Sabbath. It’s building a weekly rhythm of rest that you actually keep.

Why it matters

We live in a culture that treats rest as laziness. Sabbath pushes back on that. When we stop working for a day, we’re making a statement: the world doesn’t depend on us to keep spinning. We are not our productivity. We are creatures made in God’s image, and God rested.

Sabbath is one of the ten commandments — not a suggestion. Over time, it trains us out of the lie that our worth comes from what we produce. It’s a weekly reminder that we are loved before we do anything.
